About the Kelebija / Tompa crossing
The Kelebija / Tompa crossing links northern Vojvodina in Serbia with Hungary's Bács-Kiskun county. Kelebija is a village just west of Subotica, the nearest large city, while on the Hungarian side the border post at Tompa opens onto main road 53, which runs north via Kiskunhalas toward the Budapest region. It is the western neighbour of the busy Horgoš / Röszke motorway crossing on the E75, and many drivers treat the two as a pair, picking whichever is moving faster.
Serbia is outside the Schengen area, so this is an external Schengen border with full passport and customs checks. The crossing is open 24 hours a day for both passenger and freight traffic — it is one of the few Serbia–Hungary crossings that handles heavy goods vehicles, so a steady stream of trucks is part of daily life here. Car queues grow in summer and around holidays, when diaspora traffic between Western Europe and the Balkans surges.
Practical tips
- Full passport and customs control applies in both directions; non-EU travellers should expect the slower lane.
- Main road 53 on the Hungarian side is toll-free — a Hungarian e-vignette is only needed once you join the motorway network.
