About the Karasovići / Debeli Brijeg crossing
The Karasovići / Debeli Brijeg crossing is the main border point between Croatia and Montenegro, carrying the Adriatic coastal road (E65) across the frontier between Konavle, south-east of Dubrovnik, and Herceg Novi at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor. The Croatian D8 meets the Montenegrin M-1 here; Karasovići sits near Gruda, roughly 35 km from Dubrovnik, while Debeli Brijeg is only a few kilometres from Igalo and Herceg Novi, with a stretch of no-man's land between the two posts.
Since Croatia joined Schengen in 2023 this has been an external Schengen border, so full passport and customs checks apply in both directions. The crossing handles cars, buses and freight, and is by far the busier of the two road crossings between the countries. Traffic between Dubrovnik and the Montenegrin coast peaks sharply in July and August, when waits of several hours are possible.
Practical tips
- Both countries use the euro, so there is no need to change money when crossing.
- In summer, drivers in cars can consider the smaller Vitaljina–Kobila crossing nearby as an alternative.

Reports come in through the day. The Last reporting card at the top shows the latest one. Recent reports count a little more than old ones, and anything based on very few reports is faded — treat it with caution.
