About the Šćepan Polje / Hum crossing
The Šćepan Polje / Hum crossing sits deep in canyon country, where the Piva and Tara rivers meet to form the Drina, on the E762 corridor between Sarajevo and Podgorica. On the Bosnian side, the M18 follows the Drina up from Foča and Brod na Drini to the post at Hum; on the Montenegrin side, the road threads the spectacular Piva canyon past Plužine towards Nikšić.
This is one of the quietest and most scenic borders in the Balkans, used mainly by cars — Šćepan Polje is a hub for Tara river rafting, with Sutjeska National Park and the Durmitor massif close by. The roughly 20 km Bosnian stretch between Hum and the junction with the M20 south of Foča is infamous: narrow, partly unsurfaced and short on guardrails. Upgrades and a new Tara bridge with a joint border post are planned, but for now allow extra time. Both countries are outside Schengen, so passport and customs checks still apply.
Practical tips
- The Hum–Foča road section is rough and unsuited to low-clearance cars; drive it in daylight if you can.
- Services are sparse in the canyons — fill the tank in Foča or Nikšić and carry water.
- Traffic peaks with the summer rafting season, so check the heatmap above for the quietest hours to cross.
How to read this page
Each square is one day and hour. Green is a short wait (30 min or less), yellow is medium (up to 90), red is long. Grey squares have no reports yet. The big number is the usual wait in minutes; the small number is how many reports it is based on. Faded squares have very few reports, so treat them with caution.
We show two numbers. The usual wait (‘Typically’) is the middle of what people report — a normal day. The busy-day number (‘up to’) is how bad it can get. If you can’t be late, plan for the busy-day number.
The 2-hour window when waits are usually shortest. Arrive near its start for the best chance of a quick crossing. The per-day cards show the same for each weekday.
Reports come in through the day. The Last reporting card at the top shows the latest one. Recent reports count a little more than old ones, and anything based on very few reports is faded — treat it with caution.
Wait times for Bosnia and Herzegovina → Montenegro and the opposite direction are tracked separately and often differ significantly. Use the link at the top of the page to switch to the reverse crossing.
Public holidays, seasonal traffic, and road works can shift wait times well outside historical norms. These statistics reflect past patterns — always check current conditions before you travel.
Tap the filter header to expand or collapse the filter panel. Use the period presets — 30 days, 90 days, seasons, All time, or a custom date range — for quick access to different windows. Select specific days of the week or times of day to further narrow your analysis. Default is the current season, all days, all hours.
