About the Gradina / Kalotina crossing
Gradina / Kalotina is the major border crossing between Serbia and Bulgaria: here the E80 — the historic land route from Central Europe towards Istanbul, on the Niš–Sofia branch of Corridor X — crosses the border. The Serbian post at Gradina sits just outside Dimitrovgrad, at the end of the A4 motorway coming from Niš past Pirot; on the Bulgarian side the road passes the village of Kalotina and continues via Dragoman and Slivnitsa to Sofia, roughly 55 km away.
This is the busiest crossing between the two countries, with enormous freight volumes and, since Bulgaria's full Schengen accession on 1 January 2025, complete external-Schengen passport and customs checks. Summer brings waves of diaspora traffic heading to and from Turkey, so July and August weekends are the toughest, and truck queues can stretch for kilometres.
Practical tips
- Cars and trucks use separate lanes — a long line of lorries does not necessarily mean a long car queue.
- Bulgaria requires an e-vignette on its main roads; the Serbian A4 is a tolled motorway.
- Around holidays and summer weekends, check the heatmap above and cross at off-peak hours.

Each square is one day and hour. Green is a short wait (30 min or less), yellow is medium (up to 90), red is long. Grey squares have no reports yet. The big number is the usual wait in minutes; the small number is how many reports it is based on. Faded squares have very few reports, so treat them with caution.
We show two numbers. The usual wait (‘Typically’) is the middle of what people report — a normal day. The busy-day number (‘up to’) is how bad it can get. If you can’t be late, plan for the busy-day number.
The 2-hour window when waits are usually shortest. Arrive near its start for the best chance of a quick crossing. The per-day cards show the same for each weekday.
Reports come in through the day. The Last reporting card at the top shows the latest one. Recent reports count a little more than old ones, and anything based on very few reports is faded — treat it with caution.

Public holidays, seasonal traffic, and road works can shift wait times well outside historical norms. These statistics reflect past patterns — always check current conditions before you travel.
